Water, water everywhere
“And now the STORM-BLAST came, and he
Was tyrannous and strong:
He struck with his o'ertaking wings,
And chased us south along.“
Though Samuel Taylor Coleridge never visited the Drake Passage, his
poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner accurately describes the Drake that we
experienced today.
Once we left the Beagle Sound the wind and waves picked up rocking
and shaking the Fridtjof Nansen as she made her way south. This area,
known for its rough water, joins the southeast Pacific Ocean with the
southwest Atlantic Ocean, contributing to the Antarctic Circumpolar current.
This powerful current is unobstructed by any landmass that might slow it
down.
Our voyage today blessed us with rain and took us through winds of 30 - 50
knots and waves/swells of 6 - 7 metres.
Today the Drake Shake lived up to its name.
