Firenzi
Alas, we arrived in Florence an ancient city that began as a Roman Army camp in 58 BCE.
Its place along the Arno River made it the perfect location for commerce and trade. In the late Fifteen and sixteen centuries, Florence was home to the wealthy and influential Medici family and several highly revered Renaissance artists.
Evidence of the importance of the city are found throughout this community.
The Basilica di Santa Croce is believed to have been instituted by St. Francis, however construction on this current edifice began in 1294. Featuring 16 chapels it is the largest Franciscan church. The current facade was added in the 18th century covering the original brown brick, which is still visible behind the facade.
It is home to the tombs of several important people including
Galileo was at first considered a heretic by the Catholic Church. His body was hidden in the Medici Chapel, until permission was granted to have his tomb formally erected in the Basilica.
